Library
The St. Anne School library exists to support the curriculum, promote learning, and foster a lifelong love of reading. Our collection consists of more than 17,000 books, periodicals and audiovisual materials as well as 5 desktop computers. All students have access to materials that increase knowledge and meet the needs of recreational and inspirational reading, listening and viewing. Students develop literary appreciation, values and ethical standards.
Our library is staffed with one full-time media specialist as well as many parent volunteers who assist with shelving books, Accelerated Reader testing and coordinating book fairs.
The St. Anne School library is a teaching library. All students from Kindergarten through fifth grade have a weekly scheduled library class. Middle school students visit in conjunction with their Language Arts class. Students benefit from cooperative planning between teachers and the media specialist in selection and use of a variety of media to support and enrich the curriculum.

- Beginning in K-3/K-4, students are made aware of the variety of materials available in the library for their enjoyment. They develop listening skills as they are read to each week. They also begin to learn appropriate behavior for a quiet, pleasant library. The weekly lessons tie in with one or more of the classroom lessons from that week.
- In Kindergarten, we begin our focus on reading comprehension. We know that the child who can read (or listen to) a story and "see" the pictures in their head will have an easier time comprehending what they are reading. Our year focuses on different visualization techniques to help them “see” the story.
- First grade is a big year in the library! The students are allowed to check out their own books and we begin our Accelerated Reader program. Using author studies as our base, we continue our focus on reading comprehension through oral and computer-based quizzes. Our Accelerated Reader program is introduced in first grade and fully implemented in second grade through eighth grade.
- In grade two we spend our time creating literature folders based on the Caldecott Award winning series of books. The Caldecott award is given each year for illustration of a children’s book. We use this beautiful artwork to help the children further understand and appreciate this award-winning literature.
- Our students dive into the research process in third grade. We “travel around the world” using companion fiction and non-fiction books. They learn catalog arrangement on the computer and basic automation skills. We put it all together in a travel journal complete with a reading passport!
- Building on our third grade research skills, our fourth graders become familiar with the various types of reference materials- atlases, encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries- and the importance of the information obtained from them.
- Our fifth graders continue to refine their research skills. In addition to reference materials we spend our time improving our skills in note taking, studying, and citing sources to help them prepare for middle school.
