Middle School Science

6th Grade Physical Science
Middle School

In the 6th grade, the students are taught a mixture of math, chemistry, and physics. The class is very challenging for they participate in an in depth study of the periodic table, balancing equations, chemical reactions, acids/bases, matter, experimental design, solutions (homogeneous and heterogeneous) how to solve kinetic and potential energy equations, and more. The science lab is also enriched with hand-on labs and class activities, such as the 'candy bar lab' (measuring density), the 'cabbage juice lab '(understanding acids and bases), the bonding with classmates' lab (writing chemical formulas and understanding chemical bonding), the 'balancing ac' lab (understanding how to balance equations), the 'race car' lab (calculating kinetic energy) and more. In order to reach creative learners, projects are given every quarter. The projects are aligned with the objective being taught, for example: Science Fair (experimental design), Element Brochure (research and periodic table), Balloon Car (Newton’s laws of motion), and Building a Rollercoaster (Kinetic and Potential Energy) just to name a few.

7th grade Life Science

In the 7th grade, the students are taught basic Biology. The students learn about research and experimental design, 6 kingdoms, mitosis and meiosis, the plant and the animal cell, and genetics. They are exposed to several in-class labs as well as projects. Creating a Pedigree chart, creating a flipbook on Mitosis and Meiosis, researching a specific virus or bacteria, using microscopes to view various cells and organisms are a few of the projects SAS 7th graders experience. There are an array of labs that the students at St. Anne School will learn and discuss. Our curriculum requires a lot of technology- the students use Microsoft Power Point for project presentations, online quizzes, and various internet related activities.

8th Grade Earth Science

In the 8th grade, the students are taught basic Geology. The students learn about experimental design, study rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, weathering and erosion, fossils, astronomy, ocean floor, moon phases and how it effects the tide, etc. As with all middle school sciences at SAS, the students do several experiments and projects throughout the school year, for example: science fair (experimental design), reach a mineral or rock, build and ocean floor, The Smokey Volcano lab (observing how andesitic rocks are formed), Planet Brochure, Volcanic Popcorn (observing how pumice rocks are formed), and Rainbow Patterns (how wonder stone and igneous rock is formed). I also use a lot of technology in science, the students use Microsoft Power Point for project presentations, online quizzes, various internet related activities.
